Marietta flexes offensive muscle in 15-5 win over Ohio Wesleyan

MARIETTA, Ohio — Ohio Wesleyan University came to town sporting a .373 team batting average and with five starters hitting over .400 on the season. But it was Marietta College that put on an offensive display as the Etta Express rolled to a 15-5 win Wednesday (March 30) afternoon.

Six different Pioneers had multiple hits in the game as Marietta banged out 20 hits on the day. Senior Tim McCoy went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, four runs scored, a double and a triple. Catcher Eric White drove in six runs and finished with three hits including a double.

Ohio Wesleyan scored three times in the first inning and added another run in the third for a 4-0 lead. But the Etta Express scored the next 11 runs to take control of the game.

Marietta nearly batted around in the bottom of the third inning plating five runs. Chris Petrucci got things rolling with his second double of the game. Mike Hale followed with a single and then McCoy got the Pioneers on the scoreboard with a double driving in Petrucci.

Tyler Packanik earned a base on balls loading the bases for White.  White lined a single up the middle plating Hale and McCoy. OWU tried to throw Packanik out at third but the ball got away allowing him to score and White moved around to third.

Ohio Wesleyan skipper Tyler Mott, a former Marietta assistant, pulled his staff ace Ryan Moss and put Brett Kiser on the mound. Michael Barnabei greeted Kiser with an RBI single up the middle giving MC the lead, 5-4.

McCoy led off the fifth inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on a double from White.

The Pioneers added five more runs in the sixth. McCoy and White each had two-run singles in the inning.

The Battling Bishops got one run back in the eighth only to see Marietta put the game away with four in the bottom half of the frame. White picked up his sixth RBI on a ground out, while Packanik, Chandler Palyas and Brandon Papp each had run-scoring hits in the inning.

Tyler Nieberding started on the mound for the Pioneers and worked four innings. He was charged with four runs, three earned, on five hits and had three strikeouts. David Stover (5-0) picked up his fifth win of the season with three innings of shutout relief. Stover gave up two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Tommy Crowl and Kordell Antill each threw an inning of relief. Crowl allowed one run on two hits, while Antill retired the Bishops in order in the ninth.

Moss (3-1) took the loss for Ohio Wesleyan. He worked 2.1 innings and gave up five runs on five hits. Five other Bishops toed the rubber in the game.

Petrucci, Hale, Papp and Joe Gardner all had two hits for the Pioneers.

Marietta hosts rival Muskingum University on Saturday (April 2) for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Don Schaly Stadium.
