More news about: Rhode Island College

Providence, R.I.—Junior left fielder Austin Barry (North Kingstown, RI) went 2-for-3 with two home runs and knocked in six as Rhode Island College came from behind to defeat Becker, 11-8, at Anchorman Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Becker (11-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore center fielder Josiah Shepherd (Providence, RI) tripled and scored on freshman left fielder Danny Diaz's (Teaneck, NJ) RBI ground out. Junior shortstop TJ Sempkowski (Oceanport, NJ) smacked a solo homer to right center to close out the frame.

RIC (8-9-1) sophomore center fielder Brad Douglas (Wakefield, RI) homered to right center in the bottom of the first and the hosts tied the game in the second on senior right fielder Andrew Berlinsky's (North Kingstown, RI) RBI single.

The Hawks regained the lead in the fifth as an RBI single by Shepherd, an RBI fielder's choice by sophomore second baseman Chris Testa (Providence, RI) and another run scoring on a RIC error gave BC a 5-2 advantage.

The Anchormen took the lead for good with a six-run sixth inning, which was highlighted by a two-run blast from Barry. Becker pulled within a run, 8-7, in the seventh inning as Testa notched an RBI double and freshman right fielder Evan Berrera (West Warwick, RI) knocked in another with an RBI single.

Rhode Island College put the game out of reach on Barry's three-run blast in the eighth. Berrera had an RBI fielder's choice in the ninth, but senior reliever Kory Lawrence (Woonsocket, RI) kept the visitors from coming any closer by inducing a game-ending ground out.

Sophomore starter Edward Apice (North Kingstown, RI) picked up the win (1-0), allowing five runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits, to go along with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Douglas went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior third baseman Scott Linnane (North Kingstown, RI) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI.

Shepherd led the way for Becker, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, an RBI and a triple. Testa went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two doubles and a pair of RBI. Sophomore starting pitcher Jorge Grullon (Worcester, MA) allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Freshman reliever Tanyon Ventres (Holden, MA) took the loss (0-3).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Brandeis on Thursday, March 31 (3 p.m.).
