The University of Scranton baseball team rallied in the middle innings, but could not sustain the momentum in a 13-7 loss to Catholic on Wednesday at Connell Park in the final game of the three-game Landmark Conference series.

The Royals (10-10, 5-4 Landmark) rallied from a 4-0 deficit after two innings to take a 6-5 lead through five. But Catholic (11-13, 3-6 Landmark) scored four times in the sixth and four more in the eighth to pull away and hand Scranton its first conference series loss of the season.

Sophomore shortstop Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run, and sophomore designated hitter Chase Standen (Newtown, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) had two hits and an RBI in the loss. Sophomore first baseman Patrick Mergel (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) added a hit, an RBI and a run, sophomore center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had a hit and two runs, and junior second baseman Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) scored twice.

The team's split the doubleheader this past Saturday, with Catholic winning the opener, 10-7, and Scranton taking the second game, 17-8.

Scranton will be back in action on Thursday when the Royals travel to Edwardsville, Pa. to face Wilkes in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
