Tommies move to 4-0 in conference with home sweep

Sophomore Jake Smith and freshman Chad Clute each hit two-run homers in the first inning and three Tommie hurlers limited Augsburg to three runs and six hits in Wednesday's 11-3 St. Thomas home win in game two of an MIAC baseball doubleheader at Koch Diamond.

UST (11-3 overall, 4-0 MIAC) won game one 3-2 behind Mitch Larson's complete-game three-hitter as part of the sweep that let it stay unbeaten in the conference.

No. 19-ranked St. Thomas slapped 21 hits on the day and never trailed.

Larson, a junior transfer from Edina and Nebraska-Omaha, struck out six and allowed just one earned run and one walk over seven innings. He retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.

In game two, Tommie sophomore starter J.J. Jeronimus was staked to a 5-0 lead after one inning. He worked into the fifth inning and allowed two runs. Sophomore Drew Molin took the pitching win in relief as he got a 1-4-3 double play to escape a jam in the fifth inning with two out and UST ahead just 5-2. He allowed just one run in three-plus innings. Alex Ogren closed out the game.

Smith went 3-for-5 in game two and had four hits on the day. Clute added a two-run double for a 2-for-4 batting line in game two.

Zach Gottfredsen had two hits in each game and drove in one run with a double in game one, The go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the fifth in game one was delivered by Brady Johnson, with a two-out double to left to score Smith for a 3-2 lead.

The Tommies are home Saturday to face Concordia-Moorhead.
