DeRaad, No. 11 Oxy Continue Hot Streak

LOS ANGELES — Oxy star Devon DeRaad had another big day at the plate, rookie Will Martelstayed unbeaten on the mound and the No. 11 Occidental baseball team made it 20 wins in its last 21 games with a 12-2 victory over La Verne in seven innings at Anderson Field on Saturday. 

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 22-5 overall and are at the top of the SCIAC standings at 17-3.

La Verne falls to 16-12 and 9-8.

DeRaad, Oxy's single season home run champ (13 in 2015) and an All-SCIAC and All-Region selection, continued his terror through the SCIAC, going 3 for 5 with five RBIs, a pair of doubles, a run scored and a walk. He's leading the conference in homers and RBIs, and is in the top 10 in every major hitting category.

DeRaad is getting on base at a clip of .533 with a slugging percentage of .831 in conference games.

Martel just keeps putting together incredible starts and earning victories. The first year from San Anselmo gave up two earned in all seven innings pitched, tying him with teammate Scott Ericksenfor a SCIAC-best 5-0 record and 6-0 overall.

Martel's overall earned run average is a team-best 1.68.

The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the fourth, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. After La Verne got on the board with two in the fifth and a short rain delay, Oxy rallied for six more in the sixth the end the game early.

Oxy racked up 15 hits with big days coming from a lot of people. Brady Fuller went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, Charlie Caccamo was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Graham Pimm was 2 for 2 with a RBI and a run scored, and Reid Gibbs went 2 for 3 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs.

Next Game: The Tigers and Leopards finish their doubleheader and three-game series at Anderson Field on Saturday afternoon. 

Chasing History: Oxy is chasing the program's first SCIAC Championship since 1982 and looking to get back to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
