Thiel handles Westminster to complete season sweep

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team downed the Westminster Titans 9-3 in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) home contest Wednesday afternoon to complete the season sweep.

Westminster took the early three-run lead in the first inning but Thiel tied it up in the bottom half of the first. Dan Koller scored on a RBI groundout by Brian Genco. Bryan Mitchell followed with a two RBI single to right field to plate Josh Doody and Trent Smith.

Thiel then added two runs in the second and third innings. In the second inning, Koller recorded an infield hit to shortstop to score Nick Fowkes from third base. A batter later, Smith singled to right field to bring home Matt Elko. Mitchell came home in the third inning on a double by Daniel Patrice. Elko plated Patrice on a double of his own later in the third inning.

Thiel added some more runs in the sixth and seventh innings for insurance. Koller scored from third on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Nick Grice brought Mitchell home on a sacrifice fly to left field in the seventh inning.

Kevin Forrester earned his fifth win on the year in six innings of work. Riley Schwertz came in relief and pitched three shutout innings.

Elko and Koller each went 3-for-5 while Mitchell drove in two runs and scored twice in the victory.

Thiel (18-6, 7-2 PAC) will face the La Roche Redhawks in a non-conference game tomorrow. First pitch from Pittsburgh will be at 4 p.m.
