MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Hiram College baseball team overcame a 5-run deficit in Game 2 to earn a doubleheader split at Allegheny (Pa.) on Saturday.
Allegheny (10-11, 3-3 NCAC East) took the first game 6-0, but it was the Terriers (4-18, 1-7 NCAC) who posted an 11-7 Game 2 win.
The second game saw the Gators open a 5-0 lead through three innings of play.
Hiram got on the board in the fourth as freshman Brian Fryda (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) singled. An error by the left fielder allowed junior Brandon Gros (Ravenna, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt) to score.
The Terriers then scored five times in the sixth inning to jump in front 6-5.
With the bases loaded, junior Brandon Chesmar (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) singled in freshman Zayvier Cintron(Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic). Sophomore Phil Ward (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and senior Trevor Foster (Warren, Ohio/Champion) would follow with back-to-back 2-RBI doubles to give Hiram the lead.
Allegheny tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but a RBI single from Ward in the eighth inning gave Hiram a 7-6 lead.
The Gators had another answer in the bottom of the eighth, getting a solo home run to knot the score at 7-7.
But the Terriers put together a ninth inning rally, scoring four times for the 11-7 win.
With the bases loaded, junior Kyle Torok (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) drew a walk to put the Terriers on top. Hiram tacked on another run when freshman John Reid (Ravenna, Ohio/Crestwood) stole home. Freshman Bryan Engdahl(Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) laced a 2-RBI single to cap the late game rally.
Junior Ryan Fedor (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) fired two scoreless in relief and picked up his first win of the season.
Ward went 4-for-6 with 3-RBI's, while Torok collected two hits and came around to score three times.
In the first game, Hiram was limited to just four hits, as the Gators blew the game open in the third inning, scoring four runs en route to the 6-0 victory.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday, April 17, as they close out their weekend series with another doubleheader that will begin at noon.
