Rose-Hulman Sweeps Bluffton, Stays 1st in HCAC

BLUFFTON, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology completed a three-game baseball series sweep at Bluffton University with a 10-5 victory on Sunday afternoon. 

Rose-Hulman scored three times in the second and fourth innings to gain an early advantage, then five pitchers combined to hold off the Bluffton offense to secure the victory.  The Fightin' Engineers also remained in first place in the conference standings after Sunday's win. 

Senior Josh Koutnik led Rose-Hulman's nine-hit attack with two singles and a game-high four RBIs.  Junior Zach Trusk had a team-high three runs scored with a single and three walks, while junior Drew Schnitz and senior Caleb Kissel scored twice each.  Senior Kody Alayon pitched in with two RBIs. 

Rose-Hulman relied on a team based pitching effort to secure the win.  Senior Daniel Sutherland allowed two runs in the first three innings, before sophomore Joey Callahan came in with two scoreless innings to pick up the victory.  Chuck Alexa and Gunnar Hutchison pitched the next three innings, before Cody Sunderhaus recorded the final three outs in the series. 

The Bluffton offense also had nine hits, with Luke Hickey finished 4-5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs to pace the squad. 

With the win, the Fightin' Engineers increased their lead in the conference standings to three games at 19-7 overall and 11-3 in league play.  Rose-Hulman returns to action at Franklin College on Tuesday afternoon.
