Altieri's Heroics And Aggies' Offensive Explosion Give DelVal Baseball Doubleheader Sweep Over Summit

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Summit University on Tuesday.

The Aggies (13-12) won the first game, 6-5 in 11 innings before taking the second by a 19-2 score. The Defenders have a 5-19-1 record.

DelVal entered the seventh inning with a 3-2 lead. Summit left fielder Joe Chupick hit a leadoff double to left field. After a walk by shortstop Ben Hurlburt, pitcher Robert Mitchell sacrificed them to second and third with a bunt. An error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed Chupick to score the tying run while Hurlburt went to third. Hurlburt came home on another error with two outs and the Defenders had a 4-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore shortstop Kevin Crill drew a one-out walk. Junior second baseman Ben Lippincott singled through the right side and Crill moved to third. Junior left fielder Bobby Altieri knocked a base hit to right field to plate Crill and tie the game.

First baseman Nick Chupick began the top of the 11th with a single to center for Summit. After a sacrifice bunt, Joe Chupick took a 1-1 pitch to right center and Nick Chupick scored to give the Defenders another one-run lead.

With one out and sophomore right fielder Sammy Amos on first base, sophomore third baseman Steve Smith singled through the left side and Amos advanced to second. Amos came home and Smith went to third on an error. On a 3-2 pitch with two outs, Altieri was the hero again, lacing a base hit to right field for the walk-off victory.

Junior Trevor Dalton was the winning pitcher (3-2). He threw the final four innings and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout. Sophomore Nick Liantonio started and hurled seven frames, surrendering four runs, three earned, and five hits. He fanned one batter. BJ Greathouse took the loss (2-5). He tossed the final 3.2 innings after starter Robert Mitchell went seven.

Delaware Valley went off for 19 hits in the nightcap. The Aggies tallied eight runs in the first, four in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Summit registered one run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Smith picked up the win on the mound (1-2). He threw four shutout frames while allowing just two hits. Smith punched out three batters. Domingo Rodriguez suffered the loss (1-1).

Freshman Josh Morgan had a hot day at the plate, going four-for-five with two doubles, six RBI and three runs scored. Lippincott had three hits (four at-bats), two RBI and two runs scored and drew five walks. Altieri finished the twinbill six-for-nine with one double, four RBI and two runs scored.

Nick Chupick had a home run for Summit while Joe Chupick and Rodriguez each had a double.

DelVal hosts the University of Valley Forge for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, April 20 (4:00 p.m.).
