Scranton Baseball Drops Slugfest With DeSales On Wednesday

The University of Scranton baseball team took an early lead thanks to a big first inning, but DeSales had the final say, outslugging the Royals for an 18-10 victory at Connell Park on Wednesday.

Scranton (14-15) led 6-2 after an inning and 7-3 after two, but DeSales (19-12) scored six times in the fourth, three in the sixth and five more in the seventh to take control. The game featured a combined 31 hits, including eight for extra bases, and DeSales won despite committing five errors.

The Royals were led at the plate by senior left fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South), who finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run, highlighted by a three-run homer in the first inning. Sophomore right fielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Senior catcher Dominick Gulius (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) finished 2-for-2 with a pair of runs, freshman first baseman Ian McIntosh (Newtown, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) had two hits, an RBI and a run, sophomore shortstop Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) had a double and two RBIs, and junior outfielder Sean Haveron (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) doubled and drove in a run.

Scranton will return to action on Saturday when the Royals travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. for a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Susquehanna beginning at 1 p.m.
