New Paltz Baseball Drops 4-3 Decision to Union (N.Y.)

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Union (N.Y.) College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Shuttleworth Park, scattering seven hits in the setback.
 
The Hawks dug themselves out of a 3-0 hole, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman shortstop Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) put New Paltz on the board with an RBI single to right field before sophomore center fielder Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) drove him in with an infield single two batters later. Sophomore right fielder Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) then tied the game by stealing home.
 
Freshman center fielder Joe Ganim put the Dutchmen back on top in the bottom of the sixth, ripping a two-out single up the middle that scored what would end up being the winning run.
 
New Paltz drops to 20-13-2 overall with the loss and hosts The College at Brockport this weekend in its final games of the regular season. The three-game series starts with a single game on Friday, April 29, at 3 p.m. Union rises to 16-11 and next hosts Clarkson University in a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday, April 30, at 1 p.m.
 
Union opened scoring in the second, as Ganim doubled in a run. The Dutchmen pushed two more runs across in the third, as junior first baseman Jake Fishman ripped an RBI double before scoring on a double-steal attempt.
 
Seven different Hawks finished with a hit, while Fishman, Ganim and junior right fielder Kent Curran each collected two hits for the Dutchmen. Ganim finished with two RBI, while Fishman scored twice.
 
New Paltz used four different pitchers in the loss, while Union's freshman pitcher Tim Curtis earned the win, pitching one scoreless inning of relief in the sixth. Senior pitcher Jamie Faber was credited with the save.
