Earlham Baseball Drops Two at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Earlham College baseball team fell in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) twinbill at Transylvania University on Friday, losing game one 7-2 and game two 14-6.

The Quakers scored first in game one Junior Nate Lynch led off the game with a triple and crossed home plate when junior Brennan Laird fouled out to right field. Earlham extended its lead to 2-0 in the third when senior Brandon Smalling singled home Lynch.

The Pioneers evened the game on a two-run blast from Connor Blevi in the fourth and blew the game open when an error cost Earlham four runs in the seventh. Transylvania would add the game's final run in the eighth inning.

Junior Howie Smith took the loss, allowing two earned runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings pitched. He walked one batter and fanned four Pioneer hitters. Braden Johnson went the distance for Transylvania, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

Smalling (three hits) and Lynch (two hits) combined for five of Earlham's eight hits in game one. Senior Devin Spurgon along with juniors Cody Krumlauf and Matt Barger each finished with one hit.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers tagged Earlham starter, freshman Walter Talcott, for three unearned runs in the third and five runs in the fifth.

The Quakers scored a single run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings along with two runs in the seventh. Barger gave Earlham a run for the fifth straight inning with a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Transylvania continued its offensive attack with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

The Quakers finished with eight hits as a team to go along with four errors. Junior Eric Elkusfinished 2-4 with two RBIs.

Earlham stands at 24-12 overall and 13-10 in HCAC play. The Quakers and Pioneers will play the final game of the series tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m.
