#1 Cortland Jumps Out to Commanding Lead in 12-6 Win vs. St. Lawrence

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally top-ranked Cortland baseball team scored in each of the first five innings to take a 12-0 lead and the Red Dragons defeated St. Lawrence, 12-6, in a non-league game at Wallace Field.

Cortland improved to 34-5 with the win. The Red Dragons are scheduled to host Stevens Institute, weather permitting, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Matt Personius (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) finished 2-for-3 with a home run and Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) went 2-for-2 with a double, hit-by-pitch, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Red Dragons. Sean Getman (Oneonta) came off the bench to finish 2-for-2, Conrad Ziemendorf (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) drove in two runs, and Nick Hart (Fredonia) was 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and three runs scored.

Cortland predetermined to use at least three pitchers in the game, and the Red Dragons ended up with eight different hurlers in the game. The predetermination made starter Seth Lamando (Hopewell Junction/Roy C. Ketcham) eligible for the win as he left with the lead after two innings. Now 8-0, Lamando allowed just one hit and no walks and struck out three.

Among the highlights in the bullpen were two scoreless innings from Tanner Whiteman (Cazenovia), with just one hit allowed, and a scoreless eighth inning with one hit permitted by Ben Moxley (Oneonta).

St. Lawrence (12-21) fell despite out-hitting Cortland, 13-11. Kyle MacDonald finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Evan Reichel went 3-for-5. In addition, Beau Yaremko was 2-for-4. Cortland pitching, however, issued only one walk on the afternoon.

Cortland post three runs in each of the first three innings. Fabio Ricci (Hawthorne/Westlake) extended his on-base streak to 28 games with an RBI single in the first. Teague's RBI single highlighted the second, and Personius' solo homer started the scoring in the third. Teague added a two-run double in the fourth to make the score 11-0, and Patrick Schetter (Beacon) drove in a run with a groundout in the fifth to finish Cortland's scoring.

St. Lawrence scored on a Devin Robson RBI double in the sixth and added three in the seventh on a double play grounder, a MacDonald RBI double and an Adam Reichel RBI single. The Saints' final two runs came in the ninth on a wild pitch and a Robson fielder's choice.
