NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team fell twice to The College at Brockport in its season finale doubleheader on Saturday at Loren Campbell Memorial Field in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, dropping game one, 9-0, before losing a 4-2 decision in 12 innings.
 
The Hawks end their season at 20-16-2 overall (8-10 SUNYAC), a 13-win improvement from 2015. Brockport rises to 22-16 overall (12-6 SUNYAC) with the wins and hosts St. John Fisher College in its regular-season finale on Tuesday, May 3, at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles earned the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament.
 
Game 1: Brockport 9, New Paltz 0
 
Brockport scored nine runs off 10 hits in game one of the doubleheader, gaining the bulk of its offensive production in a five-run third inning.
 
Senior third baseman/second baseman Brett Sanders put Brockport on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly before senior second baseman Wesley Burghardt and senior left fielder Josh Martin hit a pair of two-run home runs in the third. Brockport scored a run later on in the third on a balk to swell the Golden Eagle advantage to 6-0. Brockport ended up scoring one run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to spell out the final score.
 
Freshman shortstop Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) led the Hawks offensively by going 2-for-3 with a double, while junior designated hitter Paul Ludden, senior first baseman Chris Davis and freshman catcher Justin Valentino all had multiple hits for the Golden Eagles.
 
New Paltz used four pitchers in the loss, while junior pitcher Sam McCumiskey earned the win for Brockport, throwing a four-hit shutout while striking out four.
 
Game 2: Brockport 4, New Paltz 2 (12 inn.)
 
The two teams engaged in a pitching duel in the nightcap, with Brockport needing 12 innings to come away with a 4-2 victory.
 
Sophomore second baseman Anthony Pantano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) put the Hawks on the board in the third with an RBI single to right center before Brockport tied the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout. New Paltz took the lead on an RBI groundout of its own in the home half of the fifth before Davis hit a solo home run in the sixth to knot the score once again.
 
The two teams kept each other scoreless in the seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th innings before the Golden Eagles received a two-out, two-run double from Davis in the top of the 12th to put Brockport ahead. The Golden Eagles retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
 
Pantano came up big for New Paltz in game two, going 3-for-5 with a double, while sophomore right fielder Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) went 1-for-2 with a pair of sacrifice bunts, a walk and a run scored. Davis provided the hot bat for Brockport, falling a triple short of the cycle by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, a run scored, a double and a home run.
 
Freshman pitcher Justin Stybel (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) drew the start and did not earn a decision, allowing two runs off five hits and one walk while striking out three in 6 1/3 innings of work. Junior pitcher Nick Jerolimov earned the win for Brockport, throwing four innings of scoreless relief.
