Carson provides 9th inning spark versus Fisher

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Mike Carson's pinch hit run scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning nearly sparked The College at Brockport baseball team into overcoming a slim St. John Fisher lead but the Golden Eagles inevitably fell 4-2 at Clark V. Whited Complex.

Brockport (22-17 Overall) played 21 players in tonight's final game in preparation for this weekend's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament. Carson pinch hit in the ninth inning with a line drive down the right field line past the diving Cardinals first baseman. The base knock scored Drew DeBlasiis and advanced Luke Gilbert to third base to put the tying runs on base.

However the St. John Fisher reliever, Loukas Brigham, worked around a hit and two walks to finish the game out with his sixth save of the year. Brockport starter Kyle Perez pitched a solid four innings but was sacked with the loss after giving up two runs in four innings pitched.

Back-to-back hits for the Cardinals in the fourth inning pushed the first wrong across the plate following Nate Roethel's deep drive to centerfield for a double. He scored two batters later when Frank Carnevale hit a blooper barely over the pitcher's mound for an infield run scoring single, which put Fisher ahead by two runs.

Derick Fera relieved Perez in the fifth inning and worked around a leadoff single while striking out two Cardinals and his Golden Eagle offense responded with its first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Centerfielder Dane Cala was almost struck the first pitch he saw but had to wait four more pitches before advancing onto first base with a walk. He stole second base to put himself in scoring range despite the laser like arm of Fisher catcher Victor Konstantinovsky.

Designated hitting senior Tim Segrue stayed patient at the plate working a 3-2 count before drilling a pitch on the line, unfortunately about eye level to the shortstop for out number one. Brett Sanders grounder to first base allowed Cala to advance to third base where senior shortstop Greg Ruddy would cash him in.

Ruddy watched three straight balls prior to two strikes to make the count full. He fouled one pitch off before sending the next back up the middle on a line into centerfield for a run scoring two out single.

The Golden Eagles were only able to manage a single hit between its two run scoring innings but Fera kept the Cardinals at bay completing three total innings. He allowed just a single unearned run as he pitched into the eighth inning.

Jimmy Lovelass entered the contest after a leadoff double for the Cardinals. He walked the first batter he faced before inducing a groundball run scoring double play. The run scored was charged to Fera but rendered unearned because the runner was able to advance on a passed ball.

Three Golden Eagles pitched for Brockport during the ninth inning. Lovelass, Ben Barnes and Seve Kowalski each recorded one out not before the Cardinals tacked on another run increasing their lead to 4-1.

DeBlasiis and Gilbert both reached base on walks prior to Carson's one out liner down the right field line. However Brockport would record two straight outs to close out the game with the final score of 4-2.

Brockport will travel to Cortland, N.Y. this Friday to begin the SUNYACs against the second seeded Lakers of Oswego at 3:30 p.m. during the double-elimination style tournament.
