Giants Move to Within a Game of National Championship Series by Topping La Roche

Appleton, Wis. – Keystone College moved to within a game of the NCAA Division III National Championship series on Sunday, riding a complete game, three-hitter from Jesse Arnold (Stuart, FL/Port Saint Lucie) to post a 6-1 win over La Roche College in a winner's bracket game of the College World Series at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Giants used a big sixth inning for the second time in as many games to pull away for their 12th straight victory and 16th win in their last 17 contests to improve to 39-9 on the spring.   
 
Keystone will take on the winner of Sunday night's scheduled elimination game between La Roche and St. John Fisher College (39-12) on Monday afternoon starting at 1:15 p.m., CST (2:15, EST).  The Giants need one win to advance to the best-of-three national championship series while Keystone's opponent will need to defeat the Giants twice to move on.

After scoring nine runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 16-3 victory in Saturday's tournament opener against St. John Fisher, Keystone plated five runs in the sixth inning on Sunday against the Redhawks (42-11) to break open a tie game on their way to victory.
 
22628 After allowing a first inning run, Arnold was dominant on the mound, shutting out La Roche over the final eight innings to improve to a perfect 10-0 on the season, striking out 10 batters on the day while scattering three hits and three walks.  The senior right-hander matched Keystone's record for pitching victories in a season, a mark now shared by six different Giants: Chris Homer (2001), Jeremy Pierson (2003), Brett Repard (2009), Rob Rogers (2013), and Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano de Puerto Nuevo) and Arnold, both 10-game winners this spring.
 
La Roche, the Mideast Regional champions, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, RBI single by David Lemley.  After Arnold left a pair of Redhawks' runners on base in the home third, the Giants leveled the score in the top of the fourth inning as Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) placed a two-out, RBI single into right center that brought home Billy Nelson (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) to knot the game up at 1-1.
 
Keystone then scored five runs on five hits and one walk to take a 6-1 lead in the visitor's sixth.   Nelson scored his second run of the game, coming home on a single to center off the bat of Robbie Nardelli (Eynon, PA/Valley View), who came home on an RBI groundout from Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast)Brandon Eady (Bowie, MD/DeMatha Catholic) then doubled to left field, driving in Herceg and Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) before Chris Triano (Greenwich, CT/Rye) plated Eady with a double to center to give the Giants the five-run advantage.
 
Arnold left six La Roche runners stranded on base on the day including two innings with a pair of runners left on base.  In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Redhawks' leadoff batter reached third with nobody out before the senior struck out the next three batters to keep the Giants' lead at five runs. 
 
Triano extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a 3-4 day at the plate while Nelson and Herceg added a pair of hits for Keystone, who outhit the Redhawks by a 10-3 margin.
 
La Roche starter Regis Sauer (9-1) suffered his first loss of the season after being charged with two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work. Brady Hamer yielded four runs on four hits over the final 3.2 innings on the hill for the Redhawks, who received two of their three hits from Corey Lazor.
