Union, N.J. (2/18/17) – Senior Brock Podgurski recorded a multi-hit day and senior Mike Occhi earned the win in relief as the Kean University baseball team improved to 2-0 with a 4-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy University in their home opener.

Occhi (1-0) tossed four and two thirds innings of shutout ball with seven strikeouts and just one hit and one walk.

Gwynedd Mercy struck first with a single run in the first as the Mulvey brothers got into scoring position with back to back singles.  Dave Tatoian drove in the game's first run with an RBI groundout.

#15/19 Kean (2-0) evened things up in the second as Nick Polizzano crossed the plate on a bases loaded error that would have ended the inning.

The Cougars took the lead for good with a run in the third as junior Frank Urso doubled home Podgurski who reached via a walk.

Kean added to their lead in the seventh as Podgurski (pictured left) doubled home Jim Fitzgerald who reached via a single.  The Cougars rounded out the scoring with another single run in the eighth, aided by a Griffin miscue, one of five on the afternoon.

For GMU, Nick Mulvey and Tatoian both finished with two hit days.

Kean will return to action on Sunday when they host the College at Brockport at approximately 1 p.m.  Brockport will take on Manhattanville College at Jim Hynes Stadium at 10 a.m. and the Cougars will play shortly thereafter.
