WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 16/35 Shenandoah University baseball recorded its second doubleheader sweep in as many days Sunday by taking a pair from No. 5/4 La Roche.
Shenandoah (4-0) was a 5-3 winner in game one before finishing off the sweep with an 11-10 victory in the nightcap.
The Hornets scored at least one run in every inning of the nightcap, but needed to hold on as the Redhawks rallied from a 6-2 deficit by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth.
SU answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame before adding one more in the sixth to extend its advantage to 11-8.
Coach Kevin Anderson's club needed that extra run as La Roche scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Senior Tyler Hott then sandwiched a pair of fly ball outs around a groundout to third to clinch the victory.
Hott's second save of the season made a winner of sophomore Michael Bugonowicz. Bugonowicz allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks in one inning of work.
He was the fourth of five pitchers Anderson used in the game.
In game one, freshman Gerard DePhillips scattered six hits in six innings and the Hornet offense banged out 12 hits in the 5-3 victory.
Shenandoah got its winning runs as part of a four-run sixth off of Redhawks reliever Shane Emrich (0-1).
Sophomore Luke Nussman led off with a single to left center, and after Nussman was lifted for a pinch runner, Nick Goode and Michael Cruz reached on consecutive bunt singles to load the bases with no outs.
Following a Tristan Baker strikeout, Abel Arocho reached on a fielder's choice that plated pinch runner Robert Marcelle with the tying run.
La Roche threw the ball away attempting to cut Arocho down at first, which allowed Goode to score go-ahead run.
Dan Cameron followed with a single to left center before Jake Loew drove in Arocho with the game-winning run on a two-run double to left center.
All nine starters had at least one hit with Arocho getting three hits in four at-bats.
DePhillips (1-0) struck out six in 6.0 innings of work before turning it over to senior Neil Dutton for the seventh. Dutton allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one to earn the save.
Shenandoah is off until Saturday when it begins a three-game set versus Case Western Reserve with a noon doubleheader.
