HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 19, 2017)  – Freshman Shyae Bartnick went 2-for-4 and delivered an RBI single for his first career hit as part of a four-run fifth inning as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team took advantage of four Old Westbury errors to defeat the Panthers, 5-3, at Dobbelaar Field Sunday.

"This was a quality win for our program," Aldins said. "SUNY-Old Westbury is an NCAA Regional-caliber program."

Senior outfielder Michael Mule' led off the decisive inning with a single, advancing to second on an error. Freshman Patrick Rood attempted to sacrifice the speedy center fielder to second but reliever Trey Pizzutello (0-1) mishandled the bunt, leading to the first Stevens run. With one run in and Rood in scoring position following the error, Bartnick calmly stroked a single to left for his first collegiate hit and RBI. Sophomore Matthew Pasko reached on the third Panther error of the frame and advanced to second on the fourth miscue of the inning. Senior Nolan Bennett added an RBI groundout for the final run of the frame.

"We did a good job putting pressure on their defense in the bottom half of the fifth and were fortunate to benefit from some defensive miscues," Aldins added. "This is the type of aggressive baseball we like to play."

Junior Quinn DiPasquale (1-0) pitched into the sixth inning, scattering six hits with four strikeouts for Stevens, who evened its record at 1-1.

"I felt like I had great command of the cutter and pretty much lived on that pitch,' DiPasquale said. "It forced a lot of contact and lead to some efficient innings."

Tommy Ziegen had three hits for the Panthers, who fell to 0-1.

Sophomore Carlos Leon hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to provide an insurance run. Senior Zeph Walters struck out eight of the 14 batters he faced to earn his first save.

"Great to see Carlos put a great swing on the ball for an opposite field home run," Aldins commented. "It gave us a key insurance run."

Old Westbury scored three times in the sixth. Michael Cardino singled. Jesse Russo walked. A Stevens miscue on a sacrifice attempt led to a pair of runs and Dean Sheridan plated another on a groundout.
