#10 R-MC Collects 11 Hits vs. #1 Cortland

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity), junior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and junior Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) each had two hits, one run and one RBI as the sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team fell 11-6 to top-ranked Cortland Sunday afternoon on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

Sophomore Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) also had two hits and a run for the Yellow Jackets (6-2). R-MC collected 11 hits, including four extra-base hits.

The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Butler and Spiers had consecutive one-out doubles to give R-MC a 1-0 lead. Spiers would score on a base hit by Migliorini to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 advantage.

The Red Dragons (4-1) put up five in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth before R-MC responded in the bottom of the fifth. With two away, Migliorini doubled to center and scored on a base hit by Brown to make it 7-3. Brown stole second and came home on a triply by sophomore Ian Pape (Stafford, Va./North Stafford), who later scored on a wild pitch as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 7-5.

Cortland added two in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 10-5 advantage. Junior Devin Strickler (York, Pa./Eastern York) had a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Zach Evans (Fort Mill, S.C./Seneca) to make it 10-6. The Red Dragons tallied their final run in the ninth to make the final 11-6.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Thursday, March 2, with an 11:45 a.m. contest at Marymount.
