Union, N.J. (2/28/17) – The Kean University baseball team used an eighth explosion to rally past Moravian College by the final of 10-2 on Tuesday in non-conference action.

The #14/15 Cougars plated nine runs in the deciding eighth frame, with seven hits and aided by two Moravian miscues.

Greyhound starter Ryan Kahn recorded a no-decision after holding the Cougars in check for seven innings as he allowed just one run and four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.  Cougar starter Richie Ferguson also received a no-decision as he allowed just one earned run in seven and a third innings of work.  He fanned six and allowed seven hits.

Moravian (2-2) started the scoring with two runs in the top of the second.  Carmine Palummo reached on a fielder's choice and would come around to score on a triple from David Wodzsiz.  Wodzsiz was also able to score on a throwing miscue by the Cougars to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

The score would remain that way until the fifth as Kean cut the disadvantage in half as Brock Podgurski registered a one-out single and rookie Frank LoGuidice followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position.  Freshman Mike Fidanza collected an RBI with a groundout to put the score at 2-1.

Moravian threatened in their half of the eighth with two runners in scoring position and one out, but reliever Kyle Gaeb was able to squash the threat with two strikeouts.

The tables turned in favor of Kean in the bottom of the inning as Ian Carbone entered in relief of Kahn.  Fidanza started the rally with a single and teammate Ivan Rivera got on board with a sac bunt that was mishandled by the Greyhounds.  Pinch-hitter Derek Walker was the next batter with a sacrifice but moved all the way to third as a throwing blunder allowed both runs to score giving Kean the lead for good.  The Cougars poured things on with a Frank Urso RBI triple, Nick Polizzano RBI double and a bases clearing double for Rivera to highlight the action.

Gaeb earned the win for Kean tossing one and two thirds innings of shutout, no-hit ball with three strikeouts.

Offensively, Rivera was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI while Podgurski was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

For Moravian, Evan Kulig and Wodzsiz each were 2-for-4.

Kean now heads to the road for their west coast swing which begins on Friday.
