JACKSON, Miss. (Mar. 4, 2017) – Trailing 3-0 to top-ranked Emory University, Millsaps College erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning and went on to shock the No. 1 Eagles, 17-4, to hand them their first loss of the season. The nine-run uprising was highlighted by a three-run home run by senior Joseph Stearns (Houston, Texas) that put the Majors into the lead.

Emory (11-1) opened the scoring in the first when sophomore NJ Kim (Plano, Texas) led off with a double, eventually scoring on an error. The Eagles then added a pair in the second on a two-run home run to left center off the bat of senior Chris Young (Fullerton, Calif.).

Senior Jackson Weeg (Woodstock, Ga.) started for Emory and cruised through the first three innings, blanking Millsaps (7-7) on three hits. The first signs of trouble in the fourth came when junior Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.) cracked a solo homer to left with one down to put the Majors on the board. Millsaps then put its next two hitters on board via singles before Weeg rebounded to record a strikeout for the second out.

That is when the floodgates opened. Stearns slammed a pitch over the fence in left to give Millsaps a 4-3 lead and all the momentum. The Majors went on to collect three more hits and took advantage of three errors in the field to score five more times, sending a total of 13 hitters to the plate. Senior Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.), who led off the inning, later collected a two-run single with sophomore Connor Woodall (Madison, Miss.) capping off the inning with a two-run triple.

It was all the scoring that Millsaps would need to put away Emory. Junior Jacob Mardick (The Woodlands, Texas) came on to pitch for the Majors in the second inning and held the Eagles in check during his 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing only four hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.

Millsaps went on to score in three more innings, with senior Seth Trulock (Taylorville, Ill.) adding a solo home run in the fifth and Lassere and junior Chase Calloway (Brandon, Miss.) adding RBI hits in the sixth. The Majors then polished off the vixtory in the eighth when they scored four times on four hits, getting the aid of another Emory error.

Woodall led an 18-hit attack for Millsaps with a 3-for-4 day that included the triple and a pair of RBI. Four other Majors collected a pair of hits, with Steans leading the team with four RBI. Kim and Young each tallied a pair of hits for Emory.

Millsaps and Emory will conclude the two-game series tomorrow at Twenty Field, with game time set for Noon.
