WAPPINGERS, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team swept host Mount Saint Mary on Monday evening at Dutchess Stadium, taking game one 11-4 before winning the nightcap 2-1, in non-conference action.
With the victories, the Hawks move over .500 to 3-2 overall and will head to Purchase on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest. The Knights fall to 2-5.
Game One: New Paltz 11, Mount Saint Mary 4
The Hawks scored 11 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of four errors by the Knights to run away in the opening game.
After falling behind 3-0 after three innings, New Paltz awoke from its slumber and scored thrice in the third to knot the contest at 3-3. The Knights claimed a 4-3 edge after four innings, but the Hawks plated eight unanswered to seize game one.
Freshman outfielder Savino Citriniti (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) led the bats with a 3-for-5 performance, driving in four while scoring twice. Junior designated hitter Chris Moran (Wading River, N.Y./Shorham-Wading River) finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored. In addition, eight different Hawks registered one hit apiece for the New Paltz offense.
Junior southpaw Brian LoRusso (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) earned the victory out of the pen as the lefty threw 3 2/3 frames, striking out five Knights while allowing just one hit. So far this year, LoRusso has thrown 7 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine.
Junior Kevin Montefusco (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and freshman James Magnuson (Northport, N.Y./Northport) both appeared in relief and combined for two scoreless innings and three punchouts. Sophomore Justin Stybel (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, surrendering three earned runs.
Game Two: New Paltz 2, Mount Saint Mary 1
Junior righty Conor Donachie (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) hurled six innings, scattering four hits while allowing no earned runs, earning his second win of the season in the process. Donachie struck out six and walked two.
The Knights grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Hawks responded with an unearned run in the second to tie the contest and scored on a double play in the fourth to complete the scoring.
Offensively, the Hawks managed just two hits – compared to four by the Knights – as senior outfielder Taylor Anderson (East New Market, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) and sophomore shortstop Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) collected the base knocks.
Junior Ryan Votypka (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) earned his first save of the season, throwing the final inning and striking out one as New Paltz moves over .500 for the second time this season.
