New Paltz Baseball Earns 7-5 Win at Purchase

PURCHASE N.Y. – Sophomore Justin Ganca (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore John F. Kennedy) drove in three runs to lead the visiting State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team past host Purchase 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, New Paltz improves to 4-2 on the year and will head to Stevens – first year head coach Arlan Freeman's previous school – on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers drop to 0-1.

New Paltz fell behind 1-0 after one inning of play before scoring thrice in the fourth to claim a 3-1 advantage. Purchase jumped ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the frame before the Hawks scored four-unanswered runs to go ahead 7-4 and would hold on for the road win.

Ganca finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate but picked up three RBI with a two-run double in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Sophomore Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon), junior Chris Moran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and junior Dwayne Page (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) all earned an RBI each while junior Anthony Pantano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) went 2-for-5.

Junior Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) scored twice and picked up two walks.

On the hill, freshman Anthony Amoroso (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) earned the win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings, giving up just one earned run. Junior Ryan Votypka (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tossed the final 1 2/3 frames to earn his second save of the season while striking out three Panthers.

Freshman John LoCurto (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) earned the start and threw the first 3 2/3 frames, striking out seven. Junior Jeff Sarra (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) also appeared out of the pen, tallying one punchout.
