More news about: Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. –  Another three-homer game resulted in another lopsided 14-6 win for the Chapman University baseball team over No. 16 Kean. The Panthers (12-4) scored double digit runs for the second consecutive game and hit three home runs for the second time this season.

Junior Gavin Blodgett led the offensive charge with his second multi-homer game of the year. He led off the fourth with a solo shot to left to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead and smacked a three-run shot in the seventh to give Chapman its biggest lead of the night at 14-4. He finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Junior Jared Love smashed his third homer of the season to lead off the second. After three hard hit balls fell into the gloves of Kean defenders in the first, Love led off the second with a monstrous home run to left center that tied the game at 1-1.

After Blodgett's homer in the fourth, the Panthers offense came to life with a five-run inning and followed it up with a four-run fifth. With runners on first and second, an error brought another run in for the Panthers to make it 3-1. Sophomore Christian Cosby singled in two more and sophomore Jarod Penniman singled in Cosby for a 6-1 lead.

Kean got two back in the top of the fifth but the Panthers went right back to work. Love doubled in a run. A throwing error brought two more runs home and Penniman came up with another clutch single to make it 10-4. Penniman singled four times to end the day 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.

Chapman's bullpen was called on to pitch the last six innings and got some solid outings from the six pitchers used for the day. Sophomore Jonathan Hernandeztossed two strong innings to pick up his second win. He allowed just two hits and struck out a pair. Junior Brad Steiner pitched a scoreless seventh and freshman Austin Merrill tossed a oerfect ninth with two strikeouts.

Four Panthers had multiple hits as the team pounded out 15 overall. Chapman scored in double figures for the fifth time this year.

Chapman jumps back into SCIAC play and ends its eight-game homestand with the opening of a three-game series with Whittier on Friday at Hart Park at 3 p.m.
