Simone, Standen, Jacobson Lead Scranton To Split Against Old Westbury

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior outfielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) and junior outfielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) both had four hits and freshman Casey Jacobson (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) tossed five solid innings to lead The University of Scranton baseball team to a 12-3 win over Old Westbury in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.

Old Westbury bounced back to post a 3-2 victory in the second game, but it wasn't enough to spoil a successful spring break trip for the Royals. They went 5-2 over the past five days and now stand at 8-5 on the season.

Game one – Scranton 12, Old Westbury 3

Simone finished with three doubles, a single, five runs scored and an RBI to pace the offense. Standen singled four times, drove in three and scored twice. Sophomore third baseman Ian McIntosh (Newtown, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) added three hits, a run, a stolen base and an RBI, and junior outfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) singled, doubled, drove in two and scored a run.

Jacobson made his first career start and delivered five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Royals jumped ahead with two in the first inning, then scored three in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and put the game away with four in the sixth.

Game two – Old Westbury 3, Scranton 2

Old Westbury (4-4) used a three-run fourth inning to overcome an early 2-0 Scranton lead to earn the split.

Junior first baseman Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) had two hits for Scranton, senior outfielder Sean Haveron (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) singled, scored a run and drove in the other, and Standen came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit double.

Senior lefty David Chromey (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) worked three scoreless innings of relief in the defeat.

The Royals' weekend series against Juniata has been postponed. The team's next scheduled game is Tuesday, March 21, against King's at 4 p.m. at Connell Park. Stay tuned to http://athletics.scranton.edu for schedule updates.
