AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-6-1) finished its stay at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 6-0 loss against UMass Dartmouth (5-6) March 18.
The Corsairs opened the scoring during their first at-bat, using a double, error and RBI-groundout for a 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back singles, a sacrifice and a groundout made it a 2-0 score during the top of the third inning.
A base on balls, single and hit by pitch loaded the bases with zero outs in the fifth. A strikeout and popup led to a hit batsman, and UMass Dartmouth owned a 3-0 advantage.
The Corsairs used a one-out error, walk, groundout and two-run base hit for a 5-0 edge in the seventh.
A base on balls, groundout and RBI-single finished the scoring in the eighth.
Senior designated hitter Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) accounted for the Pioneers' two hits.
Sophomore starter Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) surrendered five hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks over 4.0 innings, striking out six (0-1). Junior Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) gave up two unearned runs on one hit and a walk while registering three strikeouts in 2.1 innings, and senior Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) allowed one run on two hits and a base on balls during 2.2 innings of work, posting four strikeouts.
Freshman center fielder Nate Tellier was 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Corsairs, and senior first baseman Taylor Cacciola drove in three runs. Junior Ben Lodge pitched the first 7.0 innings, giving up two hits and a pair of walks while striking out nine (1-1).
William Paterson will host Staten Island Tuesday, March 21, at 3:45 p.m.
