HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 19, 2017)  – Sophomore Danny Poidomani scattered five hits over seven shutout innings, senior Nolan Bennett and freshman Shaye Bartnick each homered, and the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated the State University of New York at New Paltz, 3-0, Sunday evening at Dobbelaar Field.

Sophomore Carlos Leon doubled and stole a base for the Ducks (5-8-1), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

"Great to see Barrett and Bartnick drive the ball to opposite field with some power," head coach Kristaps Aldins said. "In general, our offensive approach was much better today."

Barrett's solo shot off Conor Donachie (2-1) opened the game's scoring in the second inning. Poidomani (2-2) made sure the one-run lead held up.

Using an exceptional off-speed pitch, the Rochelle Park, New Jersey native kept the Hawks (4-3) off-balance throughout the game and battled through tough at-bats when the situation called for it. Poidomani struck out nine and walked one to earn the victory. Charlie Ruegger recorded the final six outs to earn his second save.

"Poidomani and Ruegger were both outstanding," Aldins offered. "They challenged hitters from the get-go and set the tone for our team today."

"This was a great win for the team to beat a good [New Paltz] team and get back on track," Ruegger added. "At the end of the game, I want to have the ball. I had all my pitches working today and was able to pound the zone. This was one of our more complete all-around games and we can definitely use this win as momentum going forward."

New Paltz had its best opportunity to score off Poidomani in the fifth. Savino Citriniti reached with a one-out infield single and moved to second with Ryan Frost singled to right. Leadoff hitter Nick DePietro then attempted to sacrifice the runners over but reached with the Stevens pitcher slipped on the wet field. With the bases loaded, the young starter quickly regained his composure and stuck out Anthony Pantano with a high fastball and induced Jake Williams to fly out to right to leave the bases loaded. Poidomani also struck out Chris Moran after Justin Ganca's two-out triple,

Building off the momentum gained by keeping New Paltz off the board in the fifth, the Stevens bats awoke again in the fifth. Leon led off the inning with clean single between DePietro and Citriniti, but ran hard out of the box to reach second. With a runner in scoring position, Donachie grooved a pitch to Bartnick and the slugging rookie didn't miss it, crushing the offering well beyond the center field fence for his first career homer.

"I think we were aggressive and had competitive at-bats from one through nine," Bennett said. "A great win against a good team. It's time to enjoy this win tonight, refocus, and prepare for the next one."

"Today was a great effort from our team," Aldins added. "Not only did we get off a long bus trip yesterday, but our guys, with the help of our athletic department, put a ton of work in to get the field ready to play after the snowstorm."

Hoboken received nearly a foot of snow while the team was on its annual spring break trip.

The Stevens victory spoiled New Paltz head coach Arlan Freeman's return to Hoboken. Freeman served as a Stevens assistant from 2013-16.

Up Next: The Ducks travel to Union, New Jersey for a Wednesday matinee with No. 23 Kean University on March 22. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm. The Cougars upended the Ducks, 5-3, on opening day.
