Cortland Knocks 33 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep vs. Fredonia

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - Cortland completed a two-day, three-game sweep of Fredonia with 14-0 and 11-3 wins over the Blue Devils Friday at Houghton College. The nationally second-ranked Red Dragons recorded a combined 33 hits in the doubleheader and improved to 15-3 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC.

Cortland will play at Rochester Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in a makeup of a game postponed this past Wednesday.

Cortland 14, Fredonia 0

Jeff Cooke (Rome/Rome Free Academy) earned the win in the seven-inning opener with four innings of two-hit ball. He walked two and struck out one. Cooke combined with three relievers for the shutout. Eric Sandusky (Stony Point/North Rockland) retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the fifth, Anthony Visconte (East Islip) allowed one hit and fanned one in the sixth, and Jason Martin (Turin/South Lewis) recorded three straight outs in the seventh.

Steven Figueroa (Bronx/St. Raymond's) went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored and Patrick Schetter (Beacon) finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI to lead a 16-hit attack. Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck) was 2-for-6 with a triple, double, two RBI and three runs and Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) ended 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI.

Michael Wilcox took the loss for Fredonia after being charged with six runs on six hits in one-plus innings on the mound. James Krolikowski was 1-for-1 and Alexio Medinia went 1-for-2 to account for two of Fredonia's three hits.

Cortland scored three in the first on a Figueroa RBI single and a Schetter two-run double, and scored three more in the second on Perivolaris' two-run triple and Figueroa's RBI single. The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth when Figueroa walked and eventually scored on a Schetter RBI double.

The Red Dragons blew the game open with five unearned runs in the fifth. Fredonia recorded two outs to start, but an error extended the inning. That was followed by three hits, including RBI singles by Teague and Schetter, along with an error, a walk, and a Casey Komanecky (Auburn) two-run single. Cortland's final two runs came in the sixth on RBI singles by Jack Massa (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) and Dan Schweitzer (Poughquag/Arlington).

Fredonia's best scoring chance came in the second when the Blue Devils had runners on second and third with one out. With two outs, a wild pitch on a strikeout loaded the bases, but a flyout ended the inning.

Cortland 11, Fredonia 3

The Red Dragons jumped out quickly with five runs in the top of the first in the nine-inning nightcap. Jon Warner (Tully) singled and Perivolaris and Figueroa hit consecutive RBI doubles. After Teague singled, Schetter drove in a run with a groundout. The final two runs came later in the inning on a two-run single by Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee).

Cortland notched single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 8-0. Warner's groundout plated the run in the third, Schetter doubled in a run in the fourth, and a passed ball scored a run in the fifth.

Fredonia (8-10, 0-6 SUNYAC) clawed back slightly with a run in the fifth on a Ciro Frontale RBI single and a run in the sixth on a Matt Willhelm RBI single. The Blue Devils scored once in the eighth on Chris Rizzolo's run-scoring single and had the bases loaded before a fielder's choice forceout ended the threat.

Cortland secured the win with three runs in the ninth. Perivolaris doubled home a run, followed by a Schweitzer RBI single, and two batters later Schetter hit an RBI single to left.

Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway/Lynbrook) started for Cortland and earned the victory after giving up one run on six hits in five innings. He struck out four and did not walk anyone.

Schetter finished 3-for-5 with a double and hit-by-pitch and was a combined 6-for-8 with seven RBI in the twinbill. Perivolaris was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a hit-by-pitch, two RBI and three runs scored. He ended 5-for-11 with four RBI in the two games.

Teague went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and ended 5-for-9 in the two games, and Figueroa was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the second game to finish the day 5-for-7 with a walk and three RBI. Also in the nightcap, BeVard was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI and Dondero was 2-for-5 with a double.

Medinia led Fredonia with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, including a double. James Krolikowski was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ben Atkinson allowed seven runs on 11 hits in three and a third innings.
