BEVERLY, Mass. -- Every Bates baseball player in the starting lineup recorded a hit or drove in a run Sunday in the Bobcats' 10-4 victory over the Endicott Gulls.
Senior Anthony Telesca (Holtsville, N.Y.) pitched well on the mound for Bates, scattering seven hits over five innings of work, giving up two runs, walking three and striking out one. Telesca (1-1) picked up his first win of the season.
Youth was served offensively on Sunday with first-years Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.), Kyle Carter (Plantation, Fla.) and Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) leading the way. Arend went 2-3 with two runs scored, one run batted in and two walks. Carter recorded a game-high three hits in five at bats, tallying a double and a run batted in along the way. Sylvia finished 2-3 with a run scored, a run batted in and two walks.
But early on, the seniors made their presence felt.
The Bobcats (4-4) took the lead right away in the top of the first. With one away, senior John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.) got hit by a pitch. Senior captain Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) drew a walk and senior Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) reached on an infield single.
With the bases loaded and one away, senior Eric Vilanova (Bridgeport, Conn.) drove in Dinucci with a sacrifice fly. Then Arend continued his strong start to the season with a single to right, driving in Fox and making the score 2-0 in favor of Bates.
Bates tacked on four more in the second inning. With one away, Sylvia drew a walk. Senior captain Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.) followed with a single through the right side. Dinucci executed a perfect hit-and-run, singling through the hole at short with both runners going on the pitch. Sylvia scored on the play and McCarthy advanced to third, extending the lead to 3-0. That was it for Endicott starter Alexander Mandrus (0-1), the Gulls brought in Liam Burke out of the bullpen. Burke retired the first batter he faced for out number two but Canavan drew a walk to load the bases.
With the bases juiced and two away, Vilanova delivered a bases clearing double to give the Bobcats a 6-0 lead.
Bates scored three times in the fourth to add to their advantage. Canavan, Vilanova and Arend drew walks to load the bases with nobody out. Junior Asher MacDonald (Hillsborough, N.C.) drove in Canavan with a ground out, and a wild pitch brought in Vilanova. Carter drove in fellow first-year Arend with a single through the left side, making the score 9-0 in favor of Bates.
The Gulls (6-5) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth and they tallied another run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Bobcat lead to 9-2.
The Bobcats made the score 10-2 with a run in the sixth. Arend walked to start the frame and MacDonald bunted him to second. With two away, Sylvia singled in Arend for his second hit of the game.
Sophomore Brendan Smith (Hingham, Mass.) entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the sixth for Bates. The Gulls put runners at the corners with two away but Smith struck out Brad Rebello swinging to end the threat.
Down the stretch, Bates used senior Matt Casieri (Medfield, Mass.), first-year Miles Michaud (Madison, Conn.) and junior Jake Shapiro (Sandy, Utah) out of the bullpen to finish off the Gulls. Casieri and Michaud gave up a run in each of their innings on the mound, however Michaud struck out the side in the eighth. Shapiro tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out a pair.
Michael DeDonato paced the Gulls at the plate, going 2-5 with a home run and two runs batted in on the day. The Gulls tallied 12 hits and drew six walks. They left 12 men on base. Bates also tallied 12 hits and drew 10 walks. The Bobcats left 13 men on the base paths. They forced the Gulls to use eight different pitchers on the afternoon.
The Bates baseball team is back in action on Tuesday when they visit Husson (5-5) for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
