VWC Blasts Greensboro in 18-3 Slugfest

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia College baseball team slugged 18 runs on 14 hits in an 18-3 non-conference victory over Greensboro College on Tuesday.

The game was held at First National Bank Park, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Class-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins scored two runs in the first and two more in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.

Justin Erby tripled home Corey King in the first inning before Taylor Erby put the ball in play to bring home his brother for the second run.

Brady Fallon connected for his first career home run in the top of the second, chasing Austin Obenour around the bases for the 4-0 lead.

Leading 5-0, the Marlins put a three-spot on the board in the fifth inning to go up 8-0. VWC attempted four steals in the inning as the Marlins remained aggressive to pull away. Zach Clark and Jordan Sprouse drove in RBI in the frame.

Greensboro managed to scrape a run across in the bottom of the inning on a Brandon Soden RBI single, but the Marlin starter, Austin Gammon, managed to keep the Pride bats at bay.

Gammon (1-0) allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Virginia Wesleyan posted a crooked six on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth to go up by a commanding 14-1. Brandon Kussmaul started the scoring on an RBI double down the left-field line that scored Fallon. Clark later doubled home Justin Erby and Kussmaul one out later to make it 11-1. A fielding error scored two more to make it 13-1. Fallon singled home Obenour to finish the scoring while VWC batting around in the inning.

The Marlins scored their final four runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-RBI triple to left-center off the bat of King.

Fallon went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI while King and Obenour scored three runs each.

Daniel Efird and Dallas Ducote had two hits each for Greensboro (19-11).
