#6 Cortland Blanks Cazenovia, 13-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Six Red Dragons recorded multiple hits as part of a 17-hit attack and Anthony Visconte (East Islip) combined with five relievers on a five-hit shutout as Cortland defeated visiting Cazenovia College, 13-0, in a non-league contest.

Cortland (19-5), ranked sixth nationally in Division III, is scheduled to host Oneonta Friday and Saturday in league action. Those dates, however, may be adjusted due to forecasted poor weather.

Visconte earned his first victory of the season as the first Cortland pitcher in a predetermined rotation. He allowed two hits and two walks and struck out five in four innings. Kashaun Curry (Middletown) gave up one hit and fanned one in a scoreless fifth inning, followed by Dylan Powers (Moravia) with a hitless sixth inning with one walk and two strikeouts.

Jake Woods (Cortland) saw his first action of the season and allowed two hits in a scoreless seventh inning. Ryan Smith (Hancock) retired all three batters he faced, one by strikeout, in the eighth, and Ryan Koval (Cold Spring/Haldane) struck out two and walked one in the ninth.

Nate Budge (Central Square/Paul V. Moore) finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored and Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) went 2-for-2 off the bench with three RBI. Joe Tardif (Cutchogue/Mattituck) also entered as a reserve and went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Billy Kozak (Sidney) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.

Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Jack Massa (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) each reached base four times. BeVard was 2-for-3 with a walk,hit-by-pitch and RBI, and Massa ended 1-for-1 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch and three runs scored. Casey Komanecky (Auburn) finished 2-for-4 with a walk, double and two RBI, and Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck) also chipped in by going 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Nate Dietz finished 1-for-2 with a walk and Nick Castrello was 1-for-3 with a walk for the Wildcats (1-10). Chris Schad started and allowed four hits and one run over three innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Cortland led 1-0 on a Steven Figueroa (Bronx/St. Raymond's) sac fly in the third, but broke the game open with four in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the sixth. Michalski hit a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth, while Kozak singled in runs in each of those innings. Two-run doubles by Komanecky and Perivolaris highlighted the five-run sixth. The Red Dragons' final run came via a Tardif RBI double in the seventh.

Cazenovia loaded the bases with two outs in the first before Visconte struck out a batter to end the inning. The Wildcats also stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
