Oxy Pitching Leads in Wins Over Pacific

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 21 Occidental baseball team beat Pacific in a home doubleheader on Saturday, winning its weekend series with the Boxers 2-1.

Oxy got outstanding pitching performances from Nolan McCarthyJosh CohenRiley James and Nolan Watson.

Game 1: Occidental 4, Pacific (Ore.) 3

The Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second and held on for a victory in Game 1.

Pacific (Ore.) enjoyed a rally of its own in the top of the third, but came up one run short.

Oxy starter Nolan McCarthy went six innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs. Riley James pitched three scoreless innings in relief, earning the save.

Devon DeRaadMichael NetzelReid Gibbs and Graham Pimm all went 1 for 3 for Oxy. Jack Brancheau and Jamie Cooper both went 1 for 4.

The Tigers capitalized on four errors by the Boxers.

Game 2: Occidental 4, Pacific (Ore.) 1

Oxy starter Josh Cohen followed McCarthy's lead from Game 1, pitching a gem. He struck out seven batters in seven innings, giving up just one earned run.

Nolan Watson came on to finish it off with four strikeouts in a perfect two-inning save.

Devon DeRaad hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to extend Oxy's lead. He also had an RBI in the first, finishing the day with three.

Reid Gibbs and Jack Brancheau each went 1 for 2 for Oxy, and Reid Gibbs and Graham Pimm were each 1 for 3.

Season Impact: Oxy moves to 20-11 overall.

Next Game: Oxy returns to SCIAC play next weekend, facing Redlands in an important series. Game 1 is at Oxy on Friday at 3 p.m. and the doubleheader is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Redlands.
