Barry & Webb Lead RIC Past Johnson & Wales, 9-6

Providence, R.I.—Senior designated hitter Austin Barry (North Kingstown, RI) went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while sophomore third baseman Mike Webb (Pawtucket, RI) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, as the Rhode Island College baseball team defeated Johnson & Wales, 9-6, on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Anchormen (12-9) plated four runs in the second inning as senior catcher Nate Cahoone (Westerly, RI) got the visitors on the board with an RBI fielder's choice. Freshman second baseman Nate Vigeant (Coventry, RI) and Barry brought in one and two runs, respectively, with singles to put the Anchormen up, 4-0.

 

Johnson and Wales (11-10) pulled within one run with a three-run effort in the bottom of the third, but RIC responded with two runs in the fourth, keyed by another two-run single by Barry, and an additional run in the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Josh Silva (Seekonk, MA).

 

The hosts cut their deficit down to two runs, 7-5, with a two run sixth, but freshman shortstop Rommy Morel (Providence, RI) brought in two with a single in the seventh.

 

JWU got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but freshman reliever Erry Baldayac (Providence, RI) hurled two scoreless frames to pick up his first collegiate save. Freshman reliever Riley Miller (Newport, RI) earned the win (1-0), the first of his collegiate career, allowing just two runs on five hits in three innings of work. JWU freshman starter Ryan Depatie (Pawtucket, RI) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales will square off tomorrow afternoon at RIC (3:30 p.m.).
