WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 1/1 Shenandoah University won its second baseball game of the week with an 8-5 non-league victory over Frostburg State Thursday afternoon.
All nine hitters got at least one hit in the contest as SU (26-2) scored a combined five runs in the third through fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead over the Bobcats (16-14).
FSU made matters interesting with two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth off of Hornets starter Reeves Lowry (2-0), but the Hornet bullpen shut the door.
After issuing a base on balls to his initial batter and allowing an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch, southpaw Matt Burns ended a two-on, two-out threat by inducing a fly to left.
The offense got the run back in the bottom of the frame, setting senior Tyler Hott up to close out the contest with a three-run cushion.
Hott didn't need any of that cushion to pick up his sixth save of the spring, working a 1-2-3 ninth to give Shenandoah its 26th win in 28 games this season.
Nick Goode scored the game-winning run in the fifth when he came home on a Neil Dutton 6-4-3 double play.
Goode, who was 3-for-5 on the day, led off with a single up the middle, stole second and went to third on Luke Nussman's single to center.
After the DP cleared the bases, Donnie Forgacs had an infield single, stole second and scored on Robbie Marcelle's single to right.
Marcelle, who was 2-for-4, was one of five players with at least two hits on the day.
In addition to Goode's three hits and two for Marcelle, Forgacs, Dan Cameron and Jake Loew all had two hits with Loew driving in two runs and Cameron one.
Lowry pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out three before turning it over to Burns in the middle of the eighth.
Hott struck out two of the three hitters he faced.
Logan Corrigan (1-2) took the loss for Frostburg. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings.
Loew's two RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the first and a double to left center in the third. The RBI double put SU on top to stay.
The Hornets host Hampden-Sydney Saturday in an ODAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
