No. 3 UW-Whitewater Remains Unbeaten in WIAC Play

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team posted a pair of victories in dominant fashion Thursday afternoon, sweeping UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (18-3 overall, 6-0 WIAC) registered an 11-1 triumph in Game 1 in seven innings by run rule and followed it up with a 10-2 win in the nightcap.

In the second game, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs, junior centerfielder Brett Krause stole second base, advanced to third on the wild pitch and scored on a throwing error on the same play.

Sophomore catcher Mike Aiello posted a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth to double the Warhawks' lead.

After starting pitcher Heath Renz pitched around base runners in the fourth and fifth frames, UW-Whitewater plated five in the top of the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Cal Aldridge singled home a run, Aiello crossed the plate on a passed ball and junior right fielder Ryan Makuski dropped down a squeeze bunt to score another.

Sophomore left fielder Matt Wary drove home one run with a base hit to right center. Makuski scored on the same play on a throwing error.

After the Blue Devils (6-15, 3-3) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, the Warhawks got three back in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Aldridge and junior designated hitter Will Helbing and a run-scoring ground ball by Wary.

Junior right-hander Heath Renz pitched seven strong innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits while striking out six to push his record to 4-0.

In the opener, the Warhawks tallied three in the top of the first, four in the third and four in the fifth to open up a double-digit lead, which they would hold onto.

Sophomore pitcher Michael Kaska allowed only one unearned run and scattered four hits in seven innings for a complete-game win. He also struck out three and stranded seven UW-Stout runners to improve to 2-2 on the year.

Aiello finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Krause collected two hits and three RBI, and senior shortstop Jordan Kuczynski tallied two hits and two RBI.

Junior designated hitter Blake Fleischman posted two hits and three runs scored, Wary added two hits and scored two runs.

UW-Whitewater closes its four-game set against UW-Stout Friday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
