New Paltz Baseball Knocks Off Oneonta, 10-7, in SUNYAC Action

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team earned a SUNYAC victory over SUNY Oneonta on Friday afternoon by a score of 10-7.

The Hawks (11-9, 4-4 SUNYAC) will play a doubleheader against the Red Dragons (10-11, 2-6 SUNYAC) tomorrow starting at 12 p.m. With the win New Paltz builds upon their Catskill Cup lead 21-18.

New Paltz scored four runs in the first inning to build a lead they would not surrender. Sophomore first baseman Justin Ganca (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore John F. Kennedy) drove in the first run with an RBI single. Junior outfielder Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) would score on a fielder's choice before freshman outfielder Savino Citriniti (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) drove in a pair with a double.

The Red Dragons would score a run in the second inning, but New Paltz tacked on three more runs in the third on an RBI double from sophomore shortstop Danny Campbell (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and an RBI single from freshman infielder Anthony Amoroso (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) that drove in two.

Oneonta scored two more runs in the fourth, but the Hawks added three runs in the fifth on an error and a two RBI double from Ganca.

The Red Dragons scored two in the seventh, one in the eighth and one in the ninth, but with the tying run at the plate junior pitcher Jeff Sarra (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) finished the game and recorded his first save of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Michael Delio (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) started the game for New Paltz and earned his first victory of the season, giving up just two earned runs while striking out two over five innings of work against his former team.

Junior pitcher Kevin Montefusco (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) gave up no hits in two innings of relief, while freshman pitcher J.T. Carroll (Seaford, N.Y./Macarthur) gave up just one hit in one inning out of the pen.

Offensively, Ganca led the way with a 3-for-5 performance including a double and three RBIs. DePietro and junior catcher Dwayne Page (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) each recorded multi-hit games, with Page adding an RBI and a stolen base to his day.
