(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball teams used two shutouts to sweep No. 17-ranked Washington & Jefferson College today (Friday, April 14, 2017) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won game one, 4-0, and the nightcap, 3-0.
With the sweep, the Saints are 17-5 overall and 6-2 in the PAC, while the Presidents are 17-5 overall and 12-2 in the PAC.
In the first game, Thomas More scored one in the first and three in the fifth and held W&J scoreless for the 4-0 victory. Senior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six and a third shutout innings and gave up seven hits, while striking out six. Senior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the save as he pitched two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.
Sophomore shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was one-for-three and drove in all three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a double. Senior center fielder Casey Metzger(Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with a double and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Saints scored one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth and held the Presidents' for the game two 3-0 win. Junior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had the win as he pitched six shutout innings and gave up seven hits, while striking out four. Ruberg came on in the seventh and shutdown the Presidents for the save.
Senior right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the team at the plate as he was two-for-three with a run batted-in. Sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was one-for-three with a double and a RBI, junior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was one-for-three with a double and a run scored and junior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was one-for-three.
The Saints and the Presidents will close out their three-game series tomorrow with a nine inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Thomas More Field.
