Third-Ranked Warhawks Finish Four-Game Sweep Over UW-Stout

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team remained unbeaten in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon with two more wins over UW-Stout at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (20-3 overall, 8-0 WIAC) downed the Blue Devils 5-3 in 10 innings in the first game and posted an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, sophomore left fielder Matt Wary legged out an infield single with one out in the top of the 10th to bring up junior first baseman Blake Fleischman, who mashed a two-run homer down the left field line on the first pitch of the at-bat to give the Warhawks a 5-3 lead.

With one out and a runner on first, senior Mike Nompleggi relieved junior Austin Jones. After a catch near the dugout in foul territory by Fleischman, the Blue Devils (6-17, 3-5 WIAC) put another runner on with a base hit. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Nompleggi induced a fly out to complete his fourth save of the year.

Jones (6-0) picked up the win, scattering 10 hits while striking out six over 9 1/3 innings.

After UW-Stout took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, UW-Whitewater got two back in the top of the fourth. Junior centerfielder Brett Krause and senior second baseman Steve Chamberlain posted back-to-back singles to start the inning, and senior shortstop Jordan Kuczynski plated Krause with a double down the left field line. Bryden made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly down the right field line.

The Warhawks tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh on a two-out, RBI single up the middle by Wary. Sophomore third baseman Cal Aldridge, who walked and stole second with one out, came around to score the tying run.

Jones stranded two runners in the bottom of the ninth on a groundout to Fleischman to send the game to extra innings.

Wary and Krause tallied two hits apiece to lead the offense.

In the second game, UW-Whitewater scored two in the seventh inning, three in the eighth and to break open a close game in the final third of the contest.

Senior Westin Wuethrich allowed only one run on four hits while striking out nine in seven innings of work. The right-hander improve to 3-0 on the year with the win. Senior lefty Ankur Shah tossed the final two innings in relief.

Krause posted three hits and three RBI and Kuczynski totaled three hits and two RBI to pace the Warhawks' offense. Fleischman scored three runs and knocked in one, and Chamberlain and junior right fielder Ryan Makuski added one RBI apiece. Senior infielder Dylan Bersch registered two hits, three runs scored and one RBI.

UW-Whitewater resumes play Tuesday against Milwaukee School of Engineering. First pitch of the non-conference contest is slated for 3 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
