White walk-off grand slam leads Marietta to sweep of Heidelberg

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Eric White crushed a walk-off grand slam in game one and junior Scott Oberhelman tossed a complete-game in the nitecap as Marietta College swept Heidelberg University Friday (April 14) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers took the first game, 8-7, and then posted a 3-1 win in the second game.

Marietta improves to 12-11 overall and is in sole possession of second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 7-3 conference record. Heidelberg falls to 15-12 on the season and 5-5 in the OAC.

Heidelberg scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings and held a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Michael Barnabei led off with a walk. Joe Gardner pinch hit for Seamus Kenneally and also walked. Heidelberg went to the bullpen and put freshman Zach Doran on the mound.

Pioneer leadoff hitter Chris Petrucci was the first batter Doran faced and he walked him on four straight pitches to load the bases with no outs. Greg Peffley flew out to shallow center field setting the stage for White.

With the count even at 2-2, White hit a towering shot over the right field fence for the game winning grand slam. His first career home run in the pinstripes.

David Stover (5-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Tyler Nieberding. Stover worked 2.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. He walked three and had one strikeout. Nieberding tossed 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Anthony Hajdu started on the bump for the Student Princes and threw 5.1 innings. He was charged with four runs, three earned, on just two hits. Hajdu walked six and struck out one.

Marc Ochoa struck out one in 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Alex Simun tossed 1.0 inning and allowed two runs without giving up a hit. Simun walked three and struck out one. Doran allowed two runs on one hit and walked one in 0.1 innings of work.

In addition to White's slam, Mike Hale and Shane Fetsko each had a single for the Pioneers. Marietta benefitted from 10 walks issued by Berg pitchers in the game. Six of MC's runs reached base via a walk.

In the second game Oberhelman (3-1) scattered five singles and limited Heidelberg to a single run in 9.0 innings of work. It was Marietta's first complete game of the season. Oberhelman did not walk a batter and finished with five strikeouts.

Heidelberg scored its lone run in the first inning. Joey Rydzewski was hit by an Oberhelman pitch to leadoff the game. Alex Manner followed with a single to left moving Rydzewski into scoring position. Following a flyout, Cory Jacobs singled through the left side of the infield scoring Rydzewski.

Marietta knotted the score at 1-1 with an unearned run in the sixth inning. Connor Golden reached on a one-out single. Shane Fetsko hit a ground ball to the shortstop who booted the ball giving the Pioneers runners at first and second. Gardner pinch hit and laced a single to center scoring Golden.

Hale doubled to start the home half of the eighth inning. Golden sacrificed him to third with a bunt to the right side of the infield. A sharp single through the left side of the infield off Fetsko's bat scored Hale with the go ahead run.

Heidelberg pulled starting pitcher Cameron Deemer and put Brady Ansara on the mound. Ansara walked Gardner and Barnabei followed with a beautiful base hit bunt loading the bases. Petrucci worked a free pass from Ansara driving in Fetsko for a 3-1 Pioneer lead.

Oberhelman retired Heidelberg in order in the ninth to secure the victory.

Deemer (1-1) was tagged with the loss. He threw 7.1 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on nine hits. Deemer walked two and struck out two. Ansara worked one-third of an inning and allowed one hit and walked two. Ochoa retired the only batter he faced to end the eighth inning.

Hale was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Golden had two hits and scored a run, while Peffley finished with a pair of singles.

Marietta travels to Columbus on Wednesday (April 19) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Capital University.
