Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team salvaged a series split with Hiram, sweeping the Terriers by the scores of 14-4 and 13-4 on Saturday afternoon.

With their backs against the wall needing to keep their chances alive for the postseason, the Yeomen responded in a big way to snap an eight-game skid. Oberlin is now 12-15 on the season and 3-5 in the NCAC East.

Senior Brian Carney hit two home runs and drove in eight in the doubleheader sweep, while Parker Goldstein, Justin Cruz, and Ian Dinsmore each had four hits on the day.

The Yeomen trailed 4-1 after two innings in game one before they finally broke out of their funk to go on to win by the 10-run mercy-rule in seven innings.

The used some scrappy base running to score their first two runs of the game as Goldstein scored on a wild pitch in the second, and Sam Harris would score in the third on a first-and-third play as Brendan Mapes intentionally got in a rundown to allow Harris to race home.

The Yeomen would use three hits and two errors to go out on front in the fourth, scoring four runs in the inning. The big blow came courtesy of Carney as he lifted Brandon Chesmar's 1-2 pitch over the wall in right center for the three-run home run. Cruz would later follow with a two-out RBI single through the left side to make it 6-4 Yeomen.

The Yeomen would tack on one more in the fifth on a sac fly from Carney before getting two in the sixth on a two-run homer from Mapes. It was his second round-tripper of the series.

Oberlin would leave no doubt in the eventual outcome, plating five runs in the seventh to go out in front by double digits. Harris had a sac fly before Dinsmore drove in the second run of the frame. After a wild pitch resulted in another tally for the Yeomen, Cruz would belt a towering two-run home run over the wall in left to cap the game's scoring.

After some early shakiness on the mound, sophomore southpaw Zachary Steer settled in and tossed 6.1 innings to move to 3-1 on the season. He sprinkled eight hits and four walks to go along with one punchout.

The Yeomen carried over the momentum into game two, scoring seven runs over the first two innings and never looking back.

Goldstein, who went 6-of-10 in the series, had an RBI single to left center and Butler followed with a run-scoring double down the left field line in the top of the first. Carney also had an RBI groundout in the inning.

The four-run second featured an RBI double from Cruz and a run-producing single from Goldstein.

The Yeomen would post single tallies in the fourth and fifth to take a 9-0 lead. Mapes had an RBI single in the fourth, while senior co-captain Mike Masella sent in the run in the fifth.

In the sixth, Carney recorded his second 3-pointer of the day, hitting a home run with Mapes and Maxx McGee aboard.

Leading 12-0 the outcome was never in doubt, but Hiram would get on the board with four runs over the seventh and eighth innings. The Yeomen would get their final run of the game in the eighth on a groundout by Noah Lipshie.

Sophomore Noah Gear got the start on the mound, scattering eight hits over seven innings of work. Of the three runs charged to his line, just one was earned. He walked one and struck out two while moving to 3-1 on the season.

Oberlin will be back in action next Saturday when it opens at four-game set at home against Kenyon College. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
