MOOSIC, PA. – William Paterson's (12-14-2) ninth-inning rally fell short as the Pioneers suffered a 15-10 baseball loss at Scranton (12-14) April 18.

The Royals used two singles and a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead after one inning, but WP tied it up in the second when freshman catcher Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled in freshman right fielder Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne).

Scranton added two more runs during the home half of the second, taking advantage of a pair of base hits, an error, a double and a sac fly for a 3-1 advantage.

Freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) doubled to left center, and two batters later senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) hit an RBI-single up the middle for a 3-2 margin in the top of the third inning.

A two-run Patrick Mergel single pushed the Royals ahead by a 5-2 count in the bottom of the third, and the Royals put up 10 runs during the home half of the fourth, banging out 10 hits, including a pair of triples.

The Pioneers got back two of the runs in the top of the seventh inning. Junior second baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) doubled before junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled, and an error on the play allowed Eggert to touch home. Sophomore designated hitter Anthony DiBartolo (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) later plated Hoagland with a base hit into left field.

Colón started the top of the ninth with a walk and stolen base, followed by a Perez base hit and DiBartolo walk. An error allowed Colón to score, and after a popup, sophomore left fielder Garett Wiedemann (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) doubled down the left-field line to plate two runs. Freshman second baseman K.J. Martoral (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drew a base on balls and Eggert singled in Breun before a two-out Colón base hit drove across two more runs for a 15-10 score. A final strikeout ended the contest.

Colón was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, while Perez went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Wiedemann hit a pair of doubles and collected two RBI and a run scored.
