Bats Break Out In Rochester Win Over Brockport

More news about: Rochester

The University of Rochester slugged out 13 hits, including six extra base hits, in an 11-2 victory over the College at Brockport on Wednesday evening at UR's Towers Field.

UR (7-15) snaps a nine-game losing streak, while Brockport drops its fourth straight and moves to 16-14 on the season.  The game was originally scheduled to be played at Brockport, but rains on Wednesday forced the move to Rochester's campus where the Yellowjackets actually batted as the visiting team.

The middle of the Yellowjacket lineup provided most of the pop, with David Rieth, Aiden Finch and Tyler Schmidt going a combined 7-15 with 6 runs and 3 RBI.  Rieth had a double and a home run, Schmidt had a solo homer and Finch had three hits, including a double.  All nine UR hitters recorded a hit.

On the mound, UR only used two pitchers with starter John Ghyzel and reliever Garrett Renslow.  Sixes were wild with Ghyzel as the junior threw six innings and allowed six hits while striking out and walking six.  He also gave up the two Brockport runs.  Renslow finished off the game, going three scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out two.  He earned his first career save.

Rochester was able to get on the board first in the top of the second inning when Schmidt blasted a solo shot over the right field fence off of Brockport starter Jason Hellwig.  In the third, Pete Carrier singled through the right side, plating Ryland McNabb.

The Yellowjackets big inning came in the fourth when four runs scampered home, all unearned thanks to some Golden Eagle fielding miscues.  Two runs came home on a wild pitch, with the second run being scored as the ball was thrown away trying to get the initial runner out at the plate.  Jake Hertz followed by tripling in a run and then scored himself on a second wild pitch of the inning.

Schmidt picked up his second RBI of the night in the fifth.  In the seventh inning, Rieth hit a solo shot to left.  Jack Herman then tripled in Aiden Finch who reached with a double, and UR would lead 9-0.

Brockport got its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the seventh off of a tiring Ghyzel.  After a leadoff triple, the next two batters walked, chasing the Yellowjacket starter from the game.  Renslow came in and gave up a sacrifice fly with Brockport's second run coming on a 1st and 3rd double-steal.

The Yellowjackets regained the nine-run lead in the ninth after Will Conroy singled up the middle, allowing Schmidt and Finch to run home.

Brockport's Hellwig picked up the loss, giving up two runs and three hits in three innings of work.  He struck out two and walked one.  Five other relievers took the mound for the Golden Eagles.  Offensively, Brockport's Dane Cala went 2-2 with two walks and two stolen bases while Justin Valentino added a 2-4 game with a triple and run scored.

UR is now off until Sunday when the Yellowjackets travel to Ithaca.  Brockport plays three straight days on the weekend, traveling to Fredonia on Friday and Saturday and Oneonta on Sunday.
