William Paterson Baseball Suffers Loss at Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (12-16-2, 5-7 NJAC) suffered a 19-4 loss at Ramapo (16-14, 9-3 NJAC) April 21.

 

The Pioneers struck first when freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) opened the contest with a single to center field, was sacrificed to second by freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and scored when junior right fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) sent a base hit down the left-field line.

 

Ramapo crossed the plate three times during their first at-bat, thanks to a pair of a singles, a double, sacrifice bunt, sac fly and error.

 

The Roadrunners tacked on two more in the second with three two-out singles and a walk.

 

Ramapo made it a 6-1 game during the home half of the third with a walk, base hit, bunt and sacrifice fly.

 

Three straight singles by Dorio, Hoagland and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth. A fielder's choice from senior designated hitter Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and a squeeze bunt by junior catcher Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) cut the margin to 6-3.

 

The Roadrunners plated two runs during both the fifth and sixth innings, and extended their lead to 10-3 in the seventh.

 

Ferrara was issued a walk to lead off the top of the eighth, moved to second via a Hoagland single and scored on a fielder's choice and error.

 

Ramapo touched home eight times in the bottom of the eighth with five singles, one double, two walks, a pair of hit by pitches and an error.

 

Hoagland went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.

 

Sophomore Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) gave up 10 runs (nine earned), 16 hits and two walks during 5.0 innings as the starter (0-2), while classmate Jeff Lombardi (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) allowed one hit over 1.0 inning of relief. Sophomore Kevin Ludden (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) surrendered four hits, four runs (two earned) and a walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings, and sophomore Jon Bernotas (Andover, N.J./Newton) tossed the final 0.2 inning and gave up five runs, four hits and two walks.

 

Senior center fielder Brandon Martinez was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored for Ramapo. Sophomore CJ Growney went 8.0 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while collecting seven strikeouts (4-3).

 

William Paterson will play a doubleheader at Stockton Saturday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m.
