ANDERSON, Indiana – Senior Howie Smith pitched his third complete game of the season in a 4-1 victory for the Earlham College baseball team over Anderson University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Friday evening.

Smith tallied six strikeouts and walked zero batters while allowing seven hits and one earned run. The win, Smith's sixth of the season, gives the senior 20 career wins, the most in program history.

Smith's counterpart, Tucker Waddups, allowed just one earned run in seven innings for the Ravens. The Quakers did draw seven walks, however, which led to the first run of the contest in the top of the third innings. Freshman Isaiah Shake and junior Kendal Baker walked to begin the inning, and after senior Nate Lynch moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, senior Matt Barger hit a sacrifice fly to center field to manufacture a run without a hit for Earlham.

Anderson tied the game 1-1 on a single in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Quakers produced two more runs without a hit in the top of the fifth as Barger drew a bases loaded walk and senior Brennan Laird reached base via an error.

Leading 3-1, the Quakers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a single from Lynch.

Earlham had just three hits in the game with two coming off of the bat of Lynch. The Quakers did not walk a single batter, however, while the Ravens had seven walks and seven hits.

Earlham (16-11, 11-6 HCAC) sits in sole possession of second place in the conference. The Quakers and Ravens will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
