Danbury, Conn.-Sophomore starting pitcher Mike Webb (Pawtucket, RI) notched his second win of the season with a 6-5 victory against Western Connecticut in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Western Connecticut salvaged the split with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

RIC (15-16, 4-8 LEC) was led by junior center fielder Brad Douglas (South Kingstown, RI), who went 4-for-8 with a run scored in the twinbill. Junior right fielder Shaun Vigeant (Coventry, RI) had three hits with a run scored and two RBI in the two games for the Anchormen.

Junior third baseman Bill Busletto (Old Lyme, CT) went 5-for-8 with two runs scored to pace Western Connecticut (14-16, 3-8) in the doubleheader.

In the opener, RIC jumped on the board first on an RBI groundout from senior catcher Nate Cahoone (Westerly, RI). The Anchormen then used a four-run top of the fifth, which included an RBI single from Vigeant and an RBI single from senior left fielder Austin Barry (North Kingstown, RI), for the 5-0 advantage. Western Connecticut chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the fifth and two more in the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough as RIC held on for the win.

Webb (2-2) picked up the win for the Anchormen, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Junior reliever Myles Levy (Cranston, RI) picked up his second save of the season with two thirds of an inning of hitless, scoreless relief. Sophomore George Bielinza (Danbury, CT) (3-1) suffered the loss for Western Connecticut, allowing six runs on eight hits to go along with five strikeouts in seven innings for work.

The nightcap saw RIC take the early lead on an RBI double from Barry. The Anchormen added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Vigeant to go up 2-0. RIC held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when Western Connecticut plated four runs en route to the victory.

WCSU senior shortstop EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) went 3-for-3, while senior left fielder Tre' Gause (Brookfield, CT) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Barry was 2-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI in the setback for the Anchormen.

Senior starting pitcher PJ Watson (Cheshire, CT) suffered the loss (2-3) for RIC, allowing four runs on eight hits to go along with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore starting pitcher Erik Nicholson (Old Lyme, CT) picked up the win (2-1) on the mound for the Colonials, allowing two runs on nine hits in six innings of work.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Brandeis on Sunday, May 30 (noon).
