New Paltz Baseball Splits with Brockport on Saturday

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Freshman outfielder Savino Citriniti (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) totaled four RBI at Brockport in Saturday's SUNYAC baseball doubleheader as the State University of New York at New Paltz split with the Golden Eagles, winning game one, 4-2, before dropping game two, 9-5.

The Hawks (17-16, 8-10 SUNYAC) will now prepare for the 2017 SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed, hosted by top-seed SUNY Oswego, from May 5-7. New Paltz will face the No. 1 seed Lakers on Friday, May 5 at 12 p.m. in the double-elimination style bracket.

Earlier this season, the Hawks dropped the regular-season series to Oswego, 1-2, as the games were played at Bard College from April 3-4. New Paltz won the opener, 7-5, before falling in the doubleheader, 6-2 and 6-4.

Brockport (23-16, 9-9 SUNYAC) earned the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Cortland on Friday, May 5 at 3:30 p.m.

Game One: New Paltz 4, Brockport 2

Citriniti drove in two runs and juniors Chris Moran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) both finished with two hits each as the Hawks claimed game one.

Junior left-hander Brian LoRusso (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) earned the starting nod and threw 4 1/3 frames, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out one, tossing 65 pitches in the no decision.

Junior right-hander Ryan Votypka (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) appeared out of the bullpen and earned his fourth win of the spring, going the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits while throwing 34 pitches.

Brockport went ahead 1-0 after the first inning until the top of the fourth, when New Paltz plated two runs. Moran led off with a single through the left side, Williams drew a walk and with two outs, Citriniti came through with a two-run single up the middle to give the Hawks the lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Hawks threatened to score with two runners on and no outs but could not get on the scoreboard. The Golden Eagles knotted the contest up in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a two-out single to left.

But in the top of the seventh, another two-out rally for New Paltz occurred as Moran came through with an RBI single up the middle, scoring junior Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), and giving the Hawks the 3-2 edge.

Senior Anthony Diana (North Amawalk, N.Y./Somers) enjoyed a pinch-hit single and Williams followed with an RBI single to right, plating Moran as New Paltz claimed a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.

With a runner on second and no outs, Votypka was able to get out of the jam, forcing three grounds outs to give New Paltz the SUNYAC win and the first win over Brockport since March 29, 2014 – snapping an eight-game losing skid against the Golden Eagles.

Game Two: Brockport 9, New Paltz 5

Despite holding a 5-3 leading into the seventh, the Hawks surrendered six runs to Brockport in the bottom of the frame to fall in the nightcap, 9-5.

Citriniti finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and sophomore Justin Ganca (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore John F. Kennedy) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Moran scored twice and junior catcher Tyler Laco (Commack, N.Y./Commack) ripped a two-run double down the left field line in the fourth.

On the mound, freshman James Magnuson (Northport, N.Y./Northport) earned the start as the lefty threw the first four innings, scattering three runs on two hits while striking out two.

Sophomore righty Justin Stybel (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on two hits while walking three. Both sophomore Michael Delio (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) and freshman J.T. Carroll (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) appeared out of the pen for the Hawks.

In the top of the second, Ganca led off with a double to left center and scored, thanks to a Citriniti single through the right side to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks went ahead 3-0 after the top of the fourth as Moran and Ganca laced together back-to-back singles with Laco coming through with the two-run double later in the frame.

However, Brockport responded by knotting the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. In the sixth, New Paltz reclaimed the lead as Moran led off with a walk followed by another base knock by Ganca. Citriniti came through with an RBI sac fly to left and Ganca touched home off an error by Brockport's shortstop to give the Hawks a 5-3 cushion.

But the wheels fell off in the bottom of the seventh when Brockport tallied six runs on six hits and one New Paltz error to take a 9-5 advantage. The Hawks had two on with two out in the eighth but that was the last real threat for the rest of the contest.
