William Paterson Takes Two From Rowan Baseball To End Regular Season

WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team dropped both games of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at William Paterson University on Saturday. The Pioneers (15-19-2, NJAC 8-10) won the opener, 8-6 before taking the nightcap, 4-3. It was the final day of the regular season. The Profs (26-14, NJAC 10-8) are the third seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament and will host fourth-seeded Rutgers-Newark in a first-round game on Tuesday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. William Paterson secured the sixth and final spot in the conference playoffs and will travel to the top seed The College of New Jersey in the first round. In game one, center fielder Anthony Hoagland (jr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) led the Pioneers with three hits (five at bats), a double and three runs. First baseman Eriq Colon (sr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and left fielder Mike Rowe (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) totaled two hits and one RBI apiece. Colon also recorded a double and Rowe scored one run. Catcher Mike Knauf (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and second baseman Bernard Brito (jr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each drove in two runs. Knauf scored one time and Brito hit a double. Third baseman Carlos Perez (fr. Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) had a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Shortstop Matt Ferrara (fr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) crossed the plate one time. Rowan right fielder Jason Clapper (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and second baseman Alex Kokos (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) tallied two hits and one run apiece. Shortstop Matt Edwards (so. Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) produced a triple, two RBIs and one run. Third baseman Matt Jolly (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) totaled one RBI and one run. First baseman Joe Sadler (jr. Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) and designated hitter Frank Rose (fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) each scored one time. Right-hander Mario Danza (jr. Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) earned the win (3-1) in relief and righty Frank Colasante (sr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) recorded the final two outs for his seventh save. Right-hander Rob Grilli (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) suffered the loss (4-3). In the second, Perez hit a RBI double to right and William Paterson took a 1-0 lead. Each team scored a run in the third. Edwards came home on a double play and Hoagland touched the plate on Colon's double. The Profs gained the advantage in the top of the fourth when Edwards knocked in Rose and Jolly with a two-out triple to right center. Brito tied the contest in the bottom of the inning with a run-scoring double. Rowan tallied three runs in the fifth. Clapper, Kokos and Sadler all scored on errors. The Pioneers cut the deficit to one (6-5) in the sixth. Rowe came home on a miscue and Perez touched the plate on a groundout. Hoagland scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh and the game was even at six apiece. In the eighth, Knauf's base hit brought home Ferrara and Rowe plated Hoagland with a sacrifice fly. Ferrara had two hits (four at bats), a double and one run in the second contest. Colon registered a double and two RBIs. Catcher Jorge Solodkin (jr. Short Hills, NJ/Millburn), Hoagland and Brito each scored one run. Third baseman Dillon Mendel (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) led the Profs with three hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Kokos added two hits and one RBI. Center fielder Shane Brown (sr. Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon), Sadler and Jolly had one run scored apiece. Right-handed pitcher Bryan Kopko (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) was credited with the victory (3-4) in relief. Colasante pitched the ninth for his eighth save. Righty Eric Shugars (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) was tagged with the loss (3-4). Mendel put Rowan on the board in the second with a RBI single that scored Jolly. Mendel's base hit in the sixth plated Sadler for a 2-0 lead. Kokos sent a base hit to right field in the seventh and Brown came around to score. Colon's two-run double in the seventh brought the Pioneers within one (3-2). Brito and Ferrara both scored on errors in the eighth for the tying and go-ahead runs.
