BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash.) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a sweep of a non-league college baseball doubleheader from Maine-Presque Isle by scores of 13-7 in the opener and 7-6 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The host Buccaneers (12-16) overcame a 5-0 first inning deficit by scoring at least one run in each inning of the lid-lifter, as senior Aidan Desrosiers' (North Attleboro, Mass.) two-run double evened matters in the bottom of the second and an RBI double by Simone in the bottom of the third ignited a three-run rally that gave Massachusetts Maritime the lead for good.  The hosts tacked on five runs in the middle innings, as Simone collected three hits and three RBI as part of a 14-hit attack that also included a three-hit performance by senior Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.).  Junior Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) added two hits and drove in two runs in the opener for the Buccaneers, who also received two hits from Desrosiers to go with RBI off the bats of freshmen Ethan O'Hare (Marshfield, Mass.) and Wesley Lamphere (Henniker, N.H.).

Junior Justin Nichols (Adams, Mass.) came on in relief in the top of the first and pitched the final 6 2/3 innings to earn his first victory of the season on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, as he allowed pair of runs and struck out four along the way.  Freshman Martin Egan (East Bridgewater, Mass.) rapped out three of the visiting Owls' (4-28) 13 hits in the first contest, as he and freshman Brad Patterson (Harker Heights, Tex.) each drove in a pair of runs in the first inning uprising.  Junior Solomon Fast (Phillips, Maine) and sophomore Jacob Powell (Frankfort, Maine) each collected two hits and two RBI in the opening setback for Maine-Presque Isle, as Egan fanned three over the first three frames to fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Buccaneers raced out to a 4-0 first inning advantage in the nightcap on a Simone RBI single, a two-run double by freshman Alec Schenning (Fallston, Md.) and a run-scoring triple off the bat of freshman Filip Cooper (Ashland, Mass.), and the hosts extended that margin to 7-0 in the fourth on a wild pitch and two-run single by Lamphere.  The Owls closed back to within three with four tallies in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch, a two-run double by junior Matt Curry (Caribou, Maine) and an RBI single by junior Matt Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.), and Maine-Presque Isle pulled to within one in the seventh on Fast's fielder's choice and a bases-loaded walk to junior Saul Nunez (Mapleton, Maine) before Simone induced a fly ball to end the game and complete the sweep.

Lamphere, Kennedy, Schenning and freshman Matt Langan (North Easton, Mass.) recorded two hits each as part of an 11-hit nightcap attack for Massachusetts Maritime, as sophomore Travis Zurowski (Brooklyn, Conn.) scattered eight hits and struck out two over 4 2/3 innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the season.  Simone fanned a pair in earning his second save of the spring for the Buccaneers, who improved to 23-2 in 25 all-time series meetings between the two schools.  Cauchon and junior Jesus Garcia (Jewett City, Conn.) each had three hits as part of an 11-hit effort for the Owls in the second contest, while Curry and freshman Will Stinson (Skowhegan, Maine) chipped in with two hits each for the visitors.  Junior Tyler McLaughlin (Fountain Valley, Calif.) went the distance on the mound for Maine-Presque Isle, as he struck out four along the way.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Gordon in its season finale on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 4:00 p.m., as the Buccaneers missed out on the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament by a game after Framingham State swept Bridgewater State earlier in the day.  Today's contests closed out the season for Maine-Presque Isle.
