TCNJ Deals Rowan Baseball First Loss In NJAC Tournament, 5-0

UNION, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team suffered its first loss in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament, 5-0 to The College of New Jersey on Sunday night.

 

The Profs (28-15) are the third seed in the double elimination tournament. Rowan plays second-seeded Ramapo College in an elimination contest on Monday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m. The winner advances to face TCNJ in the title game on Monday at 5 p.m. The Lions (30-11) are the top seed.

 

The NJAC Championship Tournament is being held at Kean University. In other action on Sunday, TCNJ staved off elimination with a 4-3 victory over the host and fifth-seeded Cougars. Kean was knocked out with the loss. The fourth seed Rutgers-Newark was also eliminated with a 7-6 defeat to Ramapo.

 

Right-hander Michael Walley (fr. Yardley, PA/Notre Dame) hurled a complete game shutout. He (2-1) surrendered just three hits and struck out five. Righty Andrew Cartier (so. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) was tagged with the loss (4-3).

 

Lions' shortstop Zachary Shindler (jr. Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) went three-for-three with one RBI and two runs. Center fielder Mike Follet (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and catcher CJ Gearhart (sr. Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) each tallied two hits. Gearhart had a double and two RBIs while Follet scored twice. Left fielder Jacob Simon (fr. Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown) and designated hitter Alex Christian (sr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) drove in one run apiece. Third baseman Patrick Anderson (jr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) crossed the plate one time.

 

Profs' designated hitter Monny Strickland (jr. Egg Harbor Twp./Egg Harbor Twp.) produced two hits and left fielder Shawn Leydon (jr. Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) had one hit.

 

TCNJ put up two runs in the opening inning. Gearhart doubled in Anderson and Shindler scored on a fielder's choice. Christian's base hit in the sixth plated Shindler for a 3-0 advantage. Shindler knocked in Follet with a single in the seventh and Gearhart brought home Follet with a base hit in the ninth.
